Short answer
In 2020/21 away clubs won more matches than home clubs: 153 away wins (40.3%) against 144 home wins (37.9%) from 380 matches. The home-win share was 42.9% in 2021/22 and 48.4% in 2022/23, while the away-win share fell to 33.9% and then 28.7%. Draw shares were similar in all three seasons (21.8% to 23.2%).
Research finding: a reproducible calculation from the data below. It describes what happened, not why.
Scope and definitions
Premier League seasons 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23: all 380 league matches in each season (1,140 matches). Home and away follow the fixture designation in the source. A home win is a match the designated home club won on the full-time score; an away win is one the designated away club won. No cups, play-offs or other competitions.
Method
- Population
- All Premier League matches in the three seasons
- Period
- 2020/21 to 2022/23
- Included
- Matches with a full-time result in the archive's public data.
- Excluded
- None. All 1,140 matches have results; none are blocked or unplayed.
For each season, every played match is classified by its full-time score as a home win, a draw or an away win. Each count is divided by the number of played matches (380) and shown to one decimal place. Goals per match is total goals divided by played matches. The archive computes these figures from OpenFootball results; every number can be re-added from the tables below.
Findings
1. 2020/21 is the only one of the three seasons in which away wins outnumbered home wins (153 against 144).
2. The home-win share rose in each of the following seasons — 37.9%, 42.9%, 48.4% — and the away-win share fell — 40.3%, 33.9%, 28.7%.
3. The draw share changed little (21.8%, 23.2%, 22.9%), so the movement was between home and away wins rather than into or out of draws.
4. Goals per match were 2.69, 2.82 and 2.85.
These findings describe what the results show. The study does not test why 2020/21 differed from the seasons that followed.
Charts and tables
Home wins, draws and away wins by season
Away wins outnumbered home wins only in 2020/21; the home-win share then rose in each season.

Limitations
Three seasons are too few to establish a trend or a typical level for home results; the archive does not yet hold earlier seasons.
The archive holds no attendance data and no contextual documents for these seasons, so no explanation for the 2020/21 figures is tested or implied. Any discussion of match conditions in that season would first need to be documented from an official source.
The set of clubs changes each season (three promoted, three relegated), which affects results independently of venue.
Results are as published by OpenFootball and pass the archive's validation rules; they have not been independently verified match by match.
