Middlesbrough's foundation is recorded in 1876, with the club based in Middlesbrough. Their earlier honours include Second Division championships and a Football League play-off victory. The last Second Division title in that stored pre-Premier League record came in 1973/74. This archive begins its detailed league coverage with 1992/93.
Middlesbrough finished 21st and were relegated at the end of the opening Premier League campaign. Ayresome Park remained the recorded ground until 1994/95, before the Riverside Stadium became home.
Their first season at the Riverside brought a 12th-place Premier League finish. A later relegation followed despite a less negative goal difference than in that return season. The next return produced a higher placing, with an unbeaten autumn sequence stretching from October into December. That run covered 11 league matches.
The following seasons ended outside the top half before the club won the League Cup. That cup-winning season finished with Middlesbrough in 11th place. The next campaign brought their highest league placing in the archive, alongside their best points total and goal difference. Despite the cup honour, the preceding campaign had produced a lower points total and a negative goal balance. Their move into the top half came after the cup win, with a different set of league totals from the earlier campaign. They finished 7th with 55 points.
Gareth Southgate's stored appointment followed a lower league finish. His tenure included a campaign containing the club's widest league win, an 8–1 home result against Manchester City. The following season ended in relegation, with a lower points return and more negative goal difference.
The next Premier League spell contained a winter-to-spring winless sequence spanning 16 matches. Its final points return was below the earlier relegation campaign's total, although the goal difference was less negative. Middlesbrough finished 19th in 2016/17, the latest completed campaign held here.
Coverage Premier League matches only, in the seasons the archive publishes; cups and European matches are not included. Team sheets (line-ups, minutes, cards) are held for 2025/26 only. History and all-time records refer to this archive's coverage, not the club's entire existence. Manager and ground histories may have gaps; no missing spells are inferred.
