Portsmouth is home to the club of the same name, founded in 1898. Their honours before the Premier League include consecutive First Division championships and the FA Cup. The league titles came in 1948/49 and 1949/50. Earlier divisional championships also appear in the stored record. Detailed league coverage here starts at 1992/93, before the club's later Premier League entry.
A First Division championship preceded Portsmouth's arrival in the Premier League, with the title recorded in 2002/03. Fratton Park was their home throughout the top-flight seasons held here.
The opening campaign contained the largest winning margin in Portsmouth's stored league results, a 6–1 defeat of Leeds United at home. They finished the season in 13th place, before lower placings in the following campaigns. The points total fell over those early seasons, though the club remained outside the relegation positions.
A rise to 9th brought Portsmouth into the top half. Their points return was higher than in any of the preceding Premier League campaigns, and the goal difference became positive.
The next season improved the placing again and added an FA Cup victory. Portsmouth went unbeaten for 11 league matches between September and December. Portsmouth finished 8th with their highest points total in the archive.
The following league campaign returned fewer points and a lower position, with the goal difference turning negative again. A winless run began in December and continued into February.
Their final season brought a further fall in both position and points, alongside their most negative goal difference here. Their earlier top-half campaigns had both ended with positive goal differences, but that balance was not repeated in either of the final seasons. The final table records 19 points for Portsmouth, with relegation ending the spell. Their latest completed covered campaign was 2009/10, ending at the bottom of the league.
