Sheffield is the home city of Sheffield United, whose foundation dates to 1889. Their earlier honours include the First Division championship of 1897/98 and 4 FA Cups. Second and Fourth Division titles also appear in that pre-Premier League record. Detailed league coverage in this archive begins with 1992/93.

Bramall Lane's opening Premier League spell

Bramall Lane was the club's home throughout the seasons held here. The first Premier League season placed United 14th with a positive goal difference. It contained a 6–0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Bramall Lane, their largest league winning margin here.

The next season included an unbeaten spring sequence covering 8 matches, running from March into April. The final placing however fell, as did the points total, while the goal difference turned negative. United finished in the relegation positions, ending that opening spell.

A short return before Wilder's top-half season

The next Premier League appearance lasted only a season. It ended in 18th place, with a lower points total than in either campaign of the first spell.

Chris Wilder's stored tenure began during the subsequent years outside the Premier League. It included a League One title before the later top-flight return. That return campaign produced the club's highest league finish in the archive. The final position was 9th, accompanied by their highest points total and an even goal difference.

Relegations around another promotion

A winless sequence began near the end of that campaign and extended into the following January. It lasted 20 matches, during a period ending with a bottom-place finish and relegation. Wilder's first spell ended before that season was complete.

Paul Heckingbottom's later tenure included another Premier League return before Wilder took over during the campaign. They took fewer points than in the previous relegation season, and the goal difference was more negative as well. The season contained United's heaviest recorded defeat, a 0–8 home loss to Newcastle United. United were bottom again in 2023/24, the latest completed campaign in their covered Premier League record.
