Southampton are based in their namesake city and were founded in 1885. The club won the FA Cup in 1975/76, and the earlier honours record contains Southern League championships. A Third Division title is also stored before the Premier League era. The archive begins detailed league coverage with 1992/93.

The Dell and the move to St Mary's

The Dell was Southampton's home at the start of the record. The first Premier League season placed Southampton 18th, with the following season producing the same position on fewer points. Later seasons moved between the top and bottom halves without a relegation before the stadium move.

St Mary's Stadium became home in 2001/02. A later 8th-place campaign preceded lower finishes and the first relegation in this history. The final season of that spell ended with Southampton bottom of the table.

Pochettino's improvement and the higher finishes

The next Premier League return ended outside the relegation places, during a campaign that included Mauricio Pochettino's appointment. His next season brought a rise into the top half, alongside more points and a positive goal difference.

A further improvement followed his departure. That campaign included an 8–0 home result against Sunderland, Southampton's widest league victory in the archive. Their highest points total came the following season, with a final placing of 6th. The highest-placing campaign took 63 points, above the preceding season even though the goal difference was smaller. The next campaign remained in the top half, but with fewer points and a negative goal difference.

Lower finishes and short-lived returns

The later Premier League years brought lower placings, with Ralph Hasenhüttl appointed during that period. The campaign of the club's heaviest league defeat here still finished outside the relegation places. Subsequent lower-half seasons preceded relegation, with managerial changes during the final campaign.

Russell Martin's later return season included further changes before another bottom-place finish. Southampton's latest covered campaign was 2024/25, when the final points return was 12.
