Wigan Athletic were founded in 1932 and are based in Wigan. Their earlier honours include Northern Premier League titles in 1970/71 and 1974/75. The archive starts detailed league coverage at 1992/93, before Wigan's eventual Premier League entry.
The stored honours include the Third Division title of 1996/97. A Football League Trophy win followed before the ground history changes from Springfield Park to the venue now recorded as Brick Community Stadium. The move is recorded from 1999/00.
A Second Division championship came later, before the first Premier League season. The opening top-flight campaign returned the club's highest points total and best league placing in the archive. Wigan finished 10th, outside the relegation places on their first attempt.
An autumn unbeaten sequence in that campaign reached 9 matches. Within it, a run of 6 successive victories continued from September into November. The next season ended lower, with fewer points and a more negative goal difference.
The earlier Premier League survival campaign had ended in 17th place, with a lower points return than either of Bruce's league seasons in this record.
Steve Bruce's recorded appointment came during the following league campaign. Wigan improved the final position that season, then rose again in his last full campaign. The latter season contained their widest league victory here, a 5–0 away result against Hull City.
After Bruce's departure, the next campaign ended with a lower points total and Wigan's most negative goal difference in the archive. Subsequent seasons improved the points return and goal balance, though both finished outside the top half.
The final Premier League campaign brought an FA Cup win, but the league position and points total fell from the previous season. Their goal difference became more negative as well. Relegation closed Wigan's spell in 2012/13, their latest covered campaign, with a finish of 18th.
Coverage Premier League matches only, in the seasons the archive publishes; cups and European matches are not included. Team sheets (line-ups, minutes, cards) are held for 2025/26 only.
